Nature & Nurture

Human beings are biological creatures like all other animals. We are the product of millions of years of evolution. Our physical make-up is all about survival and reproduction. We strive to get better at it every single moment. All animals do.

We do something else which other animals are not adept at. We form complex intricate social structures (tribes, clans, families, nations, communities, societies etc). The combination of biology and society is what makes us what we are and do what we do.

• Our biology guides our responses to stimuli. Our ancestors survived like through responses.

• Our social structures dictate restrictions on and alterations in how we carry out our biological responses.

• We cannot split nature(biology) and nurture(society).

The desire to stay alive and stay strong is an instinctive one. But we may perish over time when we are weak. To make copies of our self we reproduce. Sexual species can evolve faster than an asexual one and hence we have sexuality. Once we are done with the prime stages of reproduction, we stop chasing mating and we start chasing virtues. It is just the way we are built.
