Power
It is human nature to love power. Power allows people to control outcomes. Whether it is in relation with environment or with self. This control is seen as a fundamental human need. Studies have show that humans feel less human with less power and more human with more. It is a natural state for humans to feel in control.
On one hand, self-dehumanisation and negative self view is direct consequence of powerlessness and nothing to do with life incidents. This is why we are power hungry.
On the other hand, it is fascinating that we give power to people we like. People who are approachable, friendly and empathetic are the ones we choose. But once they get to the power, they view the same traits that got them to power are not appropriate and they become hypocrites, they trust less, they become self serving and they treat their fellow humans in a bad manner. This is because how a lack of consequences can allow powerful people to make serious errors in judgment that have far-reaching impacts on themselves and on their environments. The nature is unleashed and the nurture is subdued as no one questions.
The psychology of power is interesting isn’t it?
